How Glenwynne Found Her Place in the Community

Moving somewhere new can be an exciting journey but also a little bit daunting when it comes to finding your place in the community. Glenwynne, one of our volunteers recently retired and moved to the Geelong region. She was on the lookout for somewhere to volunteer her services and connect with new people. “I went to an event in Portarlington that was raising funds for Anam Cara and was inspired to join the team,” said Glenwynne who impressed with Tessa Davis, Anam Cara’s Hospice Program Manager and volunteer who spoke at the event.

Shortly after, Glenwynne started volunteering with Anam Cara in December 2019, using her lengthy experience and skills as a retired nurse. “I have met some lovely people, made friendships and feel as though I’m useful, it’s very rewarding. I enjoy the feeling of doing something really helpful that is good for others,” she said. “All of the volunteers I have met have the same attitude as I do towards it. It’s so lovely and there are always smiles – it’s a very nice place to be.”

After volunteering at Anam Cara for only a brief period of time, Glenwynne has been inspired to seek further education in palliative care so that she can help in more ways around the organization – however she said you don’t need to be qualified in healthcare to be able to help out. “There are plenty of volunteering opportunities at Anam Cara. There’s administrative work, there’s cleaning and I do that as well,” she said. As well as these services Anam Cara offer a range of volunteering services in day hospice, fund raising, palliative care support, gardening, craft skills, choir.

After just a few months of volunteering, Glenwynne has seen first-hand how important volunteers are to the success of the services that Anam Cara provides. “I think there is a big need for this service  in Geelong and Anam Cara is fulfilling it. When Anam Cara expands and moves to their new facility, they will need even more volunteers. I think the need is still there – even with the current climate, it will only get bigger,” said Glenwynne.

After seeing what Anam Cara does for those with life-limiting illnesses, and the support it provides to their families and carers she’d highly recommend the service to anyone in need of end-of-life care or respite. “Go for it because the people at Anam Cara are just so caring. You get receive care and support  just as you would at home and they a so skilled at it here,” she said.
